Did you know that your little one should have their first visit with their pediatric dentist in New Orleans by age one? It's true! Early dental visits help us build rapport for positive future experiences and allow us to begin monitoring your child's oral development.

Here are some helpful tips for preparing and successfully navigating your baby's first dental visit.

Caring for Small Smiles

Parents play an integral role in creating a positive experience for their child during their first dental visits. You can prepare at home and be mindful of things you'll need the day of the visit to make it successful. Here's what you should know.

Things to Consider Before the Day of the Visit

  • Proper Scheduling — Will your baby be in their best mood in the morning? Or perhaps after a nap? Pick the right time to schedule their appointment to maximize positivity.
  • Comfort Items — Will your child feel more at home in the dental chair if they have their favorite blanket or stuffed animal? Bring it along!
  • Speak Positively — Even if you don't enjoy visiting the dentist, it's important not to project those feelings onto your child. Instead, speak positively about the dentist to help alleviate any fears your little one may have.
  • Read Stories or watch Videos — Reading stories or watching videos about visiting the dentist can help your little one feel more at ease before their appointment.
  • Lead By Example — Let your little one see you brushing and flossing your own teeth so they get comfortable with the idea of dental care.
